Judy Kay (Johnson) Boyer, age 81, was called to her heavenly home on Monday, February 24, 2025. Although she was a “warrior of independence”, she fought a courageous battle against health issues, finally succumbing to metastatic breast cancer. At all times, Judy’s faith was of utmost importance in her life, followed by the love and support of her family.
Born December 11, 1943, to parents Allan and Beth (Woodward) Johnson in Owatonna, MN, Judy was the second child between two brothers, Larry and Gary. Judy grew up in rural West Concord and rural Dodge Center, MN, graduating from Dodge Center High School in 1963.
On September 30, 1968, Judy married Rex Boyer in Dodge Center, followed by a reception in the home of her parents. Their son Michael Anthony Boyer was born on August 16, 1969. Their family experienced many adventures during Michael’s youth. They owned and lived at the Sandy Beach Resort in Osage, MN then moved on to Florence, Colorado. Judy and Rex became business owners of the Cookbook Nook (a book store) in Loveland, Colorado. Before returning to Dodge Center in 1992, they made their home in Weiser, Idaho and then Boise, Idaho.
A special thank you to Rev. Dave Breederland and her loving church family of Faith Community Church in West Concord, MN. For much of Judy’s life, she taught groups of children in Sunday school and Awana alongside her mother—they were such a great team!
Judy enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles, word searches, and crossword puzzles. She was a HUGE football fan, especially cheering on the Vikings and Broncos. Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren, and she became an avid soccer fan as she supported an entire soccer family. Bringing her much comfort and joy was her beloved cat, Teddy.
Judy is survived by her son, Michael (Christy) Boyer and grandchildren, Zachary (Allie), Sydney, Melanie, Jonathan, and Jacob, all of Rochester, MN; her brother, Gary (Jeannie) Johnson of Dodge Center; and many nieces and nephews.
Welcoming Judy to her heavenly home are parents, Allan and Beth (Woodward) Johnson; husband, Rex Boyer; grandson, Isaac Boyer; brother, Larry (Betty) Johnson; and a host of extended family members.
A heartfelt “thank you” to the amazing nurses and staff on station 4-4, Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus—especially Betsie, Savannah, Jenny, and Caroline—as well as her oncology team, Jaime Carroll (APRN, CNP, MSN) and Dr. Tufia Haddad. Also, “thank you” to neighbor and friend, Marie Geise, for always being ready and willing to assist Judy.
Memorials are suggested to the family for a future designation in Judy’s memory. Remembrances may be sent to: Judy Boyer Memorial, C/O The Michael Boyer Family, 5348 – 51st Street NW, Rochester, MN 55901
