Mental Health in High School

Posted

Many students are still living in a state of mental health crisis, according to the National Education Association. Mental health is one of the biggest issues when it comes to school. According to the CDC, or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ¨approximately 40% of high school students struggle with mental health.” The biggest mental health issue that high school-age kids struggle with is anxiety. I talked with Triton High School's counselor, Lesley Vander Waal, about some strategies students can use. For example, she said “Talking to a trusted person” doesn't need to be an adult, just someone you trust most with your information and someone who you think will help you the most.¨

Following that, I discussed some sources that you can reach out to if you're struggling, and some examples Lesley gave me were “Counselor, Teacher, and if in immediate crisis, the 988 lifeline for sure.” The biggest thing that people struggle with most with mental health is the “stigma” of asking for help, as they don't want to feel weak or like they need attention. Some ways that can help you get over the “stigma” are to know that “everyone struggles and asking for help is not only the good thing to do but also the safest thing to do,” said Lesley.

In conclusion, mental health doesn't make you look ¨weak¨ because everyone struggles with mental health. I understand the stigma of being afraid of asking for help. By getting over the stigma and talking about it, we can create a more understanding environment where everyone feels safe to seek help and prioritize their emotional well-being. Asking for help doesn't make you weak, no matter who you are. Lastly, just understand that you are not alone in this situation, and its ok to reach out; no one should have to struggle alone.

Text or call 988 Lifeline if you need help.
