Have you ever wondered who helps with Homecoming week, snow week, or treats at lunch? It's the student council, a group of students who help run the events for the school. At Triton, student council is a well-known organization, and everyone is very grateful for the people who are a part of it. The student council does a lot of things “behind the scenes" for Triton High School.
Last school year, when the student council applications were taking place, there were more than 10 students for each grade signing up. Kristine (Kristy) Faber is the student council advisor. She has been helping run student council for three years now. Kristy exclaims that the reason she wanted to be a part of helping organize student council was, as she said, “because I have seen all of you kids in elementary school with community ed events. So now that I help out with student council, I can circle back to getting to know you all and it's a nice way to reconnect.” When asked why student council is so important for schools to have, she replied, “our job is to foster school spirit and increase participation and inclusivity, and make sure everyone feels a part of the school.”
In student council, there are different positions students can be in. Going from treasurer, secretary, vice president, to president, which Abigail (Abby) Wirkus got the opportunity to be president. She has been in student council all four years of her high school career. She was a cabinet member during her 9th, 10th, and 11th grade years. Abby says, “One reason I joined student council was because I like to be involved, and student council helps me be involved. I also like to be a leader. I get to know more people and me social.” You may know that homecoming week was earlier this year. Abby states that “It went really good this year, everything went smoothly.” One of the things she enjoyed from homecoming week was the treat cart at lunch on Monday. “I think it was a big hit and everyone loved it,” she stated. One thing as president she is looking forward to is snow week. With homecoming being early, snow week is something people look forward to because “it's something different than normal and fun.”
There are many more people who are behind the scenes of student council. Everyone is important and wanted to help out with all of the fun activities. There are 40 members of student council. The senior cabinet members are Addison Oakland and Brynja Cochran. The junior members are Claire Stevenson and Gwen Chinn. Sophomores have EJ O’Keefe and Elliot Wirkus as their members. Finally, freshmen have Brinley Dickie and Rory Ginder as their cabinet members. The Cabinet Chair is Aidree Van Beek. The treasurer is Rainey Dobbs. Our Secretary is Norah Freiderich. Our student council Vice President is Lily Maldonado. As already stated, our Triton High School President is Abigail Wirkus.
None of the fun activities and games that happen during the school year wouldn’t be able to function without Student Council.
